Dave Thompson

Dave is really a marine mammal biologist by trade, working in the Sea Mammal Research Unit, at St Andrews University in Scotland. When not studying seals and whales he tries to put some of his experiences down on canvas. He has been lucky enough to spend a large part of his life working in some of the most spectacular high latitude (sounds better than cold and wet) places on the planet. Highlights such as : camping on the Antarctic ice and falling asleep to the singing of Weddell seals directly his pillow; tracking wild grey seals diving to the sea bed; driving Zodiacs with bow?riding Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins in the Falklands and Killer whales in Kamchatka; sailing in the Antarctic with Japanese whalers during the last year of commercial whaling; have had a clear influence on his choice of subjects. Dave is a self-taught artist working in both acrylics and watercolours. His illustrations have appeared in various books and magazines about marine mammals.
