Tom Payne
I graduated from the Kent Institute of art and design in 2000 and have since been a self employed sculptor and model maker. I have had work displayed all over the UK and been involved in several high profile public art projects including :
Design drawings, Marquette and master model of a baby elephant (full-size) for Bolton Council.
Helped construction of the site for Dino Dig for Natural History Museum in 2006.
Created models for clients including an award winning advertisement
('Best Employer Brand' 2005) for Whipps Cross NHS Trust, through Euro RSCG Riley (advertising firm).
My sculpture is generally figurative based and built using coiling techniques in high-grog crank clay. I concentrate on poise and character rather than realism but like my figure to be easily recognisable and relatable too. My finishing is normally quite rough as I like to show the surface and making-marks such as fingerprints. The pieces are then smokefired (rather than glazed) to preserve the surface.
