Mike Nairn

Mike Nairn who lives in the small village of West Huntingtower, a few miles west of Perth, took up wood turning seven years ago after giving up his full time occupation due to ill health. He takes a lot of pleasure from working in native woods such as elm, ash. Beech, yew. Oak, birch, cherry and apple; producing natural wavy-edge bowls, burr bowls, vases, lidded vessels with finial (often encompassing two or three different types of wood). He also produces oil burners and candle sticks; though his main passion is the production of twisted stem chalices and large platters.
Mike enjoys nothing better than the challenge of starting with a big log (many coming to him as a result of storm damage), setting it up on the lathe, and then allowing the natural colours and knots that come through during turning, to guide him into producing the right final product for that piece of wood.
Through his skilled turning and sensitive use of finishing oils that enhance the natural beauty of the woods he works with, Mike is able to achieve remarkable classic shapes that are most pleasing to the eye.
