Karen Mead

Having previously been based on the south coast of England my work has always had a maritime and coastal feel. After moving up to Scotland I am now based in the small market town of Dingwall in the Highlands, near to the vast Firths of Cromarty and Moray, and the fantastic coastal and mountainous scenery of both the east and west coasts which inspire me.

These boats are made from locally found wood with small, constructed balsa-wood and tin elements such as the life rings, gulls and floats. Each had its own name and port number and is therefore unique,- none are ever the same.

I am also making larger wall hung pieces incorporating found and made elements such as sand, wood and found objects, collected from the beaches around me.
