Angela Lawrence

My recent work in Oils alludes to the endurable mountains and seas as well as their elusive changeability; it has been inspired by the looming shapes and ever-changing shadows across the hills and horizons of Galloway and the Western Highlands, resulting in a substantial series of semi-abstract, but expressive oil paintings. Often the paintings have a quality of a glimpse recalled, an impression which carries an emotional response to the landscape. I have also been working on a contrasting series of “luminous landscapes” – semi-abstract watercolours focussing on the qualities of light and atmosphere on the west coast of Scotland.

My more abstract watercolours series, also ongoing, is called “Beyond The Stone”. This relates to the composition of the landscape – rock, water, organic matter and colour. Inspired by a fascination with the stones and rocks which lie at our feet but also form and contain the elements of the landscape we see around us: I try to reflect the organic nature of these in my method of painting – which is improvisational but is also a two-way process of guiding and controlling the work and responding to the colours and shapes as they spread across the surface.

All of my work is concerned with the perception of our physical landscape.
