Gemma Climpson
Gemma Climpson is an artist from Essex in the UK. Her most recent work focuses on landscape and seascape scenes from her travels to faraway, idyllic locations in the Maldives, Mauritius and the Caribbean.
She studied Fine Art at both school and college but describes herself as primarily self-taught in both oils and acrylics. Gemma says, “I remember always being interested in art from a young age – my teachers would comment on my artistic talent at school and that gave me the confidence to show others what I could do.”
Gemma describes her first trip to the Maldives in 2005 as life changing. “I was completely taken aback by the beautiful, tranquil surroundings and slow pace of life. I was captivated by the luminous greens and turquoise blues of tropical oceans, contrasted against unspoilt, white-washed beaches. These colours continue to be an ongoing inspiration in my work.”
Most recently Gemma has been asked to exhibit work at The National Gallery of the Maldives in early 2009. Gemma’s work has also been featured in the national publication ‘House and Home Ideas Magazine’.
Some artists say their paintings allow them to get closer to nature; mine allow me to get closer to my dreams…
My current work focuses on beautiful beach scenes – idyllic hideaways where the only things that matter are tranquillity, peace and that sense of freedom we so crave.
My art is symbolic of the future that I want for myself. This is less about being in these beautiful places, but more about being in control of my life and having the ability to choose my path.
I use the term ‘escape to paradise’ abundantly, where ‘escape’ refers to being free from a restrictive lifestyle and mundane existence. My ‘paradise’ is not necessarily the heavenly scenes I paint but stands for always doing things that I love everyday.
