Graham Chesters
Graham Chesters is an artist who lives and works on the east coast of Scotland in Broughty Ferry , Dundee where he runs a Studio and Gallery. He works in oils and his painting is characterized by its spontaneity, bold colour and the heavy (impasto) application of paint. Graham draws on the natural world to create Landscapes, Seascapes and Still Life compositions which he hopes hold their own reality. Something that can only exist through the medium of painting. A reality unknown yet somehow familiar to the viewer.
Graham has been immersed in Seascape and Landscape painting over the last six months. These paintings have been inspired by his many cycling trips up and down the East Coast of Scotland. Graham returns to his studio and paints purely from memory to produce what are essentially expressionistic images.
He never sketches. His approach is to produce complete paintings in one session at his easel. The result is around 20 paintings a month, however, Graham feels that on a good month there are only 3 or 4 paintings that he feels satisfied with and ever see the light of day.
“ I don't think I could get what I want out of painting by worrying about whether I do a good one or not. One of the great things about painting, for me, as an art form is you have no audience during the creative process, you are your own judge. You are free to follow you instincts. Most of the time I would give my work 5 out of 10. Every once in a while I produce a 9 out of 10. When that happens I really have no idea why but its the reason I keep painting.”
