Mark Smith’s Fantasy Boats

“They’re the ultimate dream boat, really. My main inspiration comes from seaside visits, the carcasses of old boats that are beaten up and weathered. The ones that interest me are the ones that have been mended, modified and extended to fit a personality. My colours are on the theme of weathering back and ageing.”

“Producing the boats is a long and intricate process. I use combinations of things found, such as metal, wood and bricks, as well as my clay. I use all sorts of techniques, including raku, fumed glazes, barium glazes, oxidised glazes to give blues and yellows and smoke firings in a sawdust kiln.”

“My work is definitely very nostalgic. Possibly it stems from my childhood. I had a fascination about sailing boats and going out exploring in a boat. Perhaps one day the opportunity to do that will come. In the meantime, I’m getting it out of my system by making my ceramic boats.”
