James Adams was born in 1971. After completing a degree in Fine Art, James started up his own business in London designing and making metal furniture and products for the retail market as well as undertaking various private commissions from architectural ironwork through to product design and sculpture, teaching himself the ancient art of Blacksmithing along the way .

In late 2004 James decided to return to his roots in sculpture and painting and set up a studio in Highland Perthshire. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland are his main source of inspiration, as is the importance of relating the everyday sights that make up its landscape.
His work can be seen as simple and iconic, drawing upon a narrative within .This desire to tell the hidden stories of ordinary objects is reinforced by a focus on technique, highlighting traditional methods of joining and working metal, be it riveting, chiselling or punching. In his paintings this is exemplified through the use of colour and unusual perspectives.
His work hopes to break down the barrier between subject and viewer, evoking a childhood memory through a use of naive forms along with an almost shadowy presence.
